During his time as a registrar, Dr Kovac trained in the field of General Surgery for 3 years at Prince of Wales, Fairfield, Concord and other Sydney Hospitals, discovering that surgery enabled him to demonstrate his skills to the highest level. During this time, Dr Kovac was drawn to the work of Urologists, especially their capacity to use surgical skill, together with the analytics of a physician, in solving a multitude of health issues for his patients.

After completing a research year under the supervision of Professor Richard Millard at Prince Henry Hospital, Sydney, Dr Kovac was accepted into the Urological Training Scheme, where he completed training at St Vincent’s Hospital, St George Hospital and Westmead Hospital. Despite being offered a position as a Urologist in a major Sydney hospital, Dr Kovac chose to set up practice in the Illawarra, preferring to raise his family of four children, with his wife, in the wonderful lifestyle that this picturesque region has to offer.

Dr Kovac has a special interest in keyhole surgery (robotic and laparoscopic) and has perhaps the longest experience in Australia in keyhole surgery, having commenced using laparoscopic techniques in 1992. He was a pioneer of laparoscopic techniques to treat kidney cancer with keyhole surgery and also keyhole prostatectomy in Australia. He trained in Paris and London and has since trained numerous other surgeons in this method. He applies his long keyhole experience to his robotic surgery, and is able to offer the complete range of surgical and non-surgical options to his patients, with his primary focus being patient care, patient safety and the best possible outcomes.
